Discover Peru in 9 days: Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lago Titicaca Puno
In this 9-day Peru tour you will experience an unforgettable adventure through Lima – famously known as the “City of Kings” – and Cusco the ancient Inca capital located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. You will explore the world wonder of Machu Picchu and visit various archaeological sites. You will also hike to the colorful mountain and explore the turquoise Humantay Lagoon. Afterwards you will travel to Puno where you will explore archaeological sites, the Titicaca Lake with its floating islands of Uros and Taquile and observe the great biodiversity of the visited areas. Trust me you will find this itinerary to be a solid way to enjoy your stay in Peru over 9 days for sure.
Upon arrival in Lima, you will be picked up from the airport and transferred to your hotel. After checking in you will have free time to rest and have lunch before beginning the city tour. At 2:00 PM you will start a guided tour through the “City of Kings” visiting Lima’s Historic Center including the Plaza de Armas the main square, Government Palace, Lima Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace and other key sites. Later the tour continues with a walk to visit Lima’s oldest bar the Bar Cordano and then a visit to the San Francisco Museum – a religious art museum from the 17th century where you can view its impressive library and many bones displayed in its mysterious Catacombs. Afterwards the group will be transferred to the Pueblo Libre district to visit the Larco Private Museum where you will see more than 45,000 original ceramic pieces housed in an 18th century mansion built over a pre-Columbian pyramid dating from the 7th century. You bet you will appreciate the numerous treasures exhibited in one of the most prestigious museums in the world for gold and silver. Do not miss the storage area and the exclusive collection of pre-Columbian erotic ceramics which is one of the most popular attractions in South America. At 6:00 PM you will be transferred back to the hotel.
Overnight in Lima.
After breakfast at the hotel you will head to the airport for your flight from Lima to Cusco (flight duration approximately 1 hour). Upon arrival you will be received at Cusco’s airport and transferred to your chosen hotel. In Cusco you will be served an aromatic coca tea to help with the altitude adjustment and then have time to rest and enjoy a local lunch before the city tour begins. At 1:30 PM the tour will start with visits to the Temple of the Sun (Koricancha), the Plaza de Armas, the main streets, the Central Market (San Pedro) and two nearby ruins: the Sacsayhuamán Fortress and finally Kenko. At 6:00 PM you will be transferred back to the hotel.
Overnight in Cusco.
The Sacred Valley tour begins at 7:30 AM with a pickup from your Cusco hotel. You will then travel to the upper part of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and have the opportunity to visit picturesque towns known for their crafts, ceramics and agriculture. During this immersive experience you may interact with the local community in Chinchero. The tour includes visits to several attractions such as Chinchero (typical market colonial church and archaeological site), the agricultural experimental center of Moray and the Maras salt mines. After visiting the typical market and colonial church in Chinchero, you will continue to the town of Urubamba for lunch (optional US$20 per person). The tour then proceeds to the Ollantaytambo fortress where descendants of the Incas still reside in traditional houses. Finally you will go to the Ollantaytambo train station to board a train departing at 3:37 PM. The train journey lasts approximately 2 hours to the town of Aguas Calientes where you will arrive around 5:00 PM.
Overnight in Aguas Calientes.
Early in the morning after breakfast you will travel to the station to board the bus for a 30-minute ride to the Machu Picchu Citadel. A guided tour lasting 3 hours will cover the most important sites within Machu Picchu. After the guided portion you will have free time to explore on your own (optionally you can climb Huayna Picchu for an extra US$70 per person – no kidding this is an experience not to miss). At the appropriate time you will descend from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes where you can have lunch at one of the local restaurants. In the afternoon you will take the train back to Cusco. You must be at the train station 30 minutes before departure. Upon arrival at Ollantaytambo station a company representative will transfer you to your Cusco hotel by car (approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes).
Overnight in Cusco.
At 5:00 AM your guide will pick you up at your hotel and transport you to the village of Cusipata-Paucarpata. Along the journey you will pass through various towns and enjoy incredible views of the Peruvian Andes; the trip takes about 2 hours. Upon arrival a stop is made for a hearty breakfast and to gather necessary supplies for the hike to the Rainbow Mountain. After this brief pause the journey continues for approximately 40 minutes during which you will observe scenic landscapes, mysterious mountains and deep valleys. You will reach the village of Phullawasipata at 4650 m above sea level; from there the ascent on foot begins and lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes until reaching the summit of the Rainbow Mountain at 5100 m above sea level where you will be able to enjoy impressive views of the Andes and local wildlife. All the surrounding mountains are reddish and offer striking views of the valleys and the colorful mountain. You will have ample time to take photos and videos – honestly it is a sight to behold – before beginning the descent which takes between 1 hour and 1 hour 15 minutes to return to Phullawasipata where your transportation awaits for a well-deserved and delicious lunch. After lunch you may visit some local family homes to observe traditional Inca lifestyles that are still maintained. Later the transfer back to Cusco begins; you will arrive around 4:00 PM and be dropped off at your hotel marking the end of the tour of the Mountain of Colors.
Overnight in Cusco.
At 5:00 AM your guide will pick you up at your Cusco hotel and transport you northwest to the village of Mollepata where you will travel through the lush Apurímac River valley. In this small picturesque village you will enjoy a breakfast that energizes you for the journey ahead. You will then continue to the starting point of the hike near the village of Soraypampa at 3900 m above sea level. After a short break the trek begins toward the Humantay Lagoon located at 4180 m above sea level; the ascent lasts approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. At the top you will appreciate the stunning lagoon and the imposing Salkantay snow-capped mountain on the opposite side. After an explanation by your guide and taking memorable photos (you know how these moments are priceless) you will have time to enjoy the surroundings before returning on foot to Soraypampa. From there you will be driven to a restaurant in Mollepata to have lunch with panoramic views of the Apurímac valley. Finally you will be transferred back to Cusco arriving around 4:00 PM.
Overnight in Cusco.
After a good breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the bus station where you will board a tourist bus for a journey lasting approximately 9 hours. The itinerary includes four excursions with guided visits to major attractions along the southern Altiplano corridor. Stops include the Andahuaylillas temple known as the “Sistine Chapel of America”, the Inca temple of Raqchi and at midday in the city of Sicuani a buffet lunch is provided. The tour continues with a stop at the Raya Pass at 4335 m above sea level and a visit to the Inca-Aymara museum of Pukara. Each excursion lasts between 20 to 40 minutes allowing time for questions, photos and brief walks to appreciate the sites – no joke this is a long day but totally worth it. Upon arrival in Puno a representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel.
Overnight in Puno.
After breakfast at the hotel you will be transferred to the port in Puno (located on Lago Titicaca) where you will board a boat to visit the Floating Islands of the Uros for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. You will observe local customs and traditional crafts with an opportunity to participate in an immersive experience with the local people. Next the boat will take you to Taquile Island which is renowned for its scenic, ethnic, cultural and archaeological value. Afterwards the boat returns to the port in Puno where you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel or, if preferred, dropped off in the city center so you can explore on your own.
Overnight in Puno.
After breakfast at the hotel you will be picked up for transfer to Juliaca Airport which is approximately 1 hour from Puno. At the airport you will complete check-in procedures and receive your boarding passes before taking the flight back to Lima (flight duration approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes). Depending on the departure time of your international flight you may rest at Lima airport until your flight or have time to explore central Lima on your own and then return in time for your connecting international departure.
