Join our one-day Rainbow Mountain adventure and be one of the first to witness this jaw-dropping natural wonder! This trek isn’t just about snapping that classic photo of Vinicunca (you know, the one you’ve seen all over Instagram). You’ll wander through emerald-green valleys, spot fluffy llamas and alpacas, and feel tiny beneath snow-capped peaks. And guess what? We’ll even take you through the Red Valley—a place so wild and colorful, it’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped onto Mars!

Highlights

  • Walk through postcard-perfect green valleys with views of icy glaciers like Ausangate
  • Stand on top of Rainbow Mountain (16,515 feet up!) and see those crazy-bright stripes up close
  • Discover the Red Valley’s rusty-red landscapes—most tours skip this hidden gem
  • Meet local llamas and alpacas hanging out along the trail
  • Small groups (only 6 people max) so it feels like hiking with friends
  • Beat the crowds with an early start—you’ll have the mountains mostly to yourself
  • Breathe easy with oxygen tanks and first aid kits (super important up high!)

Itinerary

DAY 1:

Cusco → Rainbow Mountain → Red Valley → Cusco

We’ll pick you up bright and early at 3 AM from your Cusco hotel. Snuggle under a blanket in our van as we drive three hours through the dark, watching city lights fade into starry Andean skies. By sunrise, we’ll reach the trailhead near Llacto village—here, you’ll munch a quick breakfast while staring at peaks dusted with snow.

As we start hiking, the valley unfolds like a green carpet. Alpacas munch grass nearby, their furry faces peeking up as we pass. That giant glacier ahead? That’s Ausangate—it’ll be your constant companion as we climb. The trail gets steep near the top, but take it slow! When you finally reach Rainbow Mountain’s summit, your camera will go wild: red, yellow, and turquoise stripes streak across the slopes like nature’s paint palette.

After soaking in the views (and catching your breath!), we’ll wander over to the Red Valley. This 30-minute walk feels like entering a rust-colored dream—the ground glows crimson, and the silence feels almost magical.

Heading back down, we’ll refuel with lunch at the trailhead before the drive back to Cusco. You’ll be back by 3 PM—just enough time for a nap or to explore the city’s cobblestone streets!

Inclusions

  • A friendly guide who knows these mountains like their backyard
  • Safety gear: oxygen tanks (for when thin air hits) + fully stocked first aid kit
  • Breakfast and lunch (think sandwiches, fruit—hiker fuel!)
  • Snacks to munch as you walk
  • Comfy private van with blankets for that chilly morning ride
  • Trekking poles to steady your steps
  • Hotel pickup/dropoff so you don’t stress about logistics
  • A pre-trip WhatsApp chat to answer all your “what ifs”
  • 24/7 support in case anything comes up

Extra Costs to Plan For

  • Entrance fees: 30 soles each for Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley (pay cash there)
  • Horse rental: 90 soles round-trip if you’d rather ride partway
  • Tipping your guide (not required, but a nice gesture if they rocked!)

What to Bring

  • Your passport (if you want that cool mountain stamp!)
  • LOTS of water (1.5 liters minimum)
  • Sunscreen AND lip balm—trust us, that high-altitude sun is sneaky
  • Layers! A down jacket for cold mornings, rain gear just in case
  • Sturdy shoes—some trail parts get slippery
  • Cash for photos with alpacas (locals ask 5 soles—about $2)
  • A portable charger (cold zaps phone batteries fast)
