This tour’s got a mix of cool nature, Inca stuff, and older ruins. You’ll see Tipón (Inca terraces!), Pikillacta (ancient city!), and a church in Andahuaylillas they call the “Sistine Chapel of America”—super fancy! Plus, eat local food like fried pork (chicharrón) or guinea pig (cuy).

The South Valley near Cusco has snowy mountains, wetlands, and TONS of good food. Locals love eating here. The route’s also called the “Baroque Route” ’cause of the pretty churches—like the one in Andahuaylillas we’ll visit.

TOP SPOTS

  • TIPÓN: Inca terraces and water systems (they still work!).
  • PIKILLACTA: Old ruins from before the Incas—over 1,000 buildings!
  • ANDAHUAYLILLAS CHURCH: Looks like the Sistine Chapel inside. So. Much. Gold.
  • HUACARPAY LAGOON: See birds and cool views.
  • FOOD STOPS: Try chicharrón in Saylla or tocto soup in Huasao. YUM.
  • LEARN STUFF: History, culture, art—all in one day!

Itinerary

DAY 1:

SOUTH VALLEY TOUR

The South Valley Tour is a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, offering a unique glimpse into the rich heritage of the Cusco region. Your day begins at 8:00 AM, as we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. The adventure starts with a scenic drive through the South Valley, where snow-capped mountains, lush wetlands, and charming villages set the stage for an unforgettable journey.

First Stop: Tipón
Our first destination is Tipón, located at 3,300 meters (10,827 feet) above sea level. This archaeological site is a testament to the ingenuity of the Inca civilization. As you explore, you’ll be amazed by the 12 massive terraces carved into the mountainside, designed for agricultural purposes. The intricate water channels, still functioning after centuries, showcase the Incas’ advanced engineering skills. The panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains are breathtaking, making Tipón a perfect introduction to the wonders of the South Valley.

Next Stop: Pikillacta
From Tipón, we head to Pikillacta, an ancient pre-Inca city located at 3,200 meters (10,499 feet). This sprawling archaeological site was built by the Wari civilization, which thrived long before the Incas. As you wander through the ruins, you’ll encounter plazas, storage houses, and towering structures that once formed part of a bustling urban center. The site’s eerie, ghost-town atmosphere is both fascinating and humbling, offering a glimpse into a civilization that shaped the region’s history.

Then: Andahuaylillas
Our journey continues to the picturesque town of Andahuaylillas, situated at 3,100 meters (10,171 feet). Here, we visit the town’s famous church, often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of America.” Step inside, and you’ll be dazzled by the Baroque artistry that adorns the walls and ceilings. Gold leaf decorations, intricate paintings, and stunning frescoes create an atmosphere of grandeur and reverence. While photography isn’t allowed inside, the beauty of this sacred space will stay with you long after you leave.

On the Way Back: Food and Local Delights
As we make our way back to Cusco, we stop in Saylla, a village renowned for its delicious chicharrón (fried pork). The crispy, flavorful dish is a local favorite and the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploration. We also make a quick stop to pick up some Oropesa bread, a sweet and soft treat that’s a specialty of the region. If time allows, we’ll pass through Huasao, another food hotspot known for its tocto soup, a traditional Andean dish.

By 2:45 PM, we’ll arrive back in Cusco, dropping you off at your hotel with a full heart and a deeper appreciation for the history, culture, and flavors of the South Valley. This tour is more than just a sightseeing trip—it’s an immersive experience that connects you to the ancient civilizations, artistic traditions, and culinary delights that make this region so special.
